How to care for diabetic teeth?

Diabetes patients have a higher risk of developing certain oral problems than healthy people. Because diabetes reduces resistance to infections, inflammation of the oral cavity is more common - periodontal disease, oral mycosis and odontogenic inflammation (in the case of untreated tooth decay). This is why people with diabetes should pay special attention to the health of their teeth and entire oral cavity.

Oral hygiene recommendations for diabetics

  • Diabetics should frequently visit the dentist because they are more prone to diseases of the teeth and gums.
  • Therefore, they should brush their teeth at least twice a day, and preferably after every meal.
  • In order not to hurt sensitive gums it is recommended to use a toothbrush with soft synthetic bristles with rounded ends.
  • Oral hygiene should be supplemented by flossing, which reaches into places most inaccessible for toothbrushes (in diabetics, the amount of saliva is reduced, hence remnants of food are not rinsed and cause plaque).
