What is Primary Healthcare?

Primary Healthcare (in Polish: Podstawowa Opieka Zdrowotna – POZ) is a fundamental part of the healthcare system. It offers outpatient medical services to patients, funded by the National Health Fund (in Polish: Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia – NFZ). Through Primary Healthcare, patients have access to family doctors, paediatricians, and nurses who diagnose and treat common illnesses, and refer patients for additional tests or specialist care when needed.

The main objective of Primary Healthcare is to provide comprehensive, continuous and accessible healthcare services. This ensures that patients receive support for everyday health concerns, preventive care, and the management of chronic conditions.

What Primary Healthcare services are provided?

Medical consultations

Primary Healthcare doctors are responsible for diagnosing and treating common illnesses such as infections, high blood pressure, diabetes, and allergies, while also providing initial medical care. Booking an appointment with a family doctor is your first step when health concerns arise. If further evaluation or specialized treatment is needed, your doctor can refer you to the appropriate specialist.

Preventive healthcare

Primary Healthcare includes preventive and diagnostic services such as blood pressure checks, blood sugar testing, and complete blood counts – aimed at early detection of potential health issues. Doctors also participate in vaccination programs for both children and adults.

Paediatric care

Primary Healthcare paediatricians provide care for children from birth through adolescence. Services include routine check-ups, health assessments, and vaccinations. Doctors monitor physical and mental development and support parents in managing any concerns.

Care for patients with chronic illnesses

Our doctors offer comprehensive, ongoing care for individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, or heart disease. Treatment involves regular check-ups and therapy adjustments based on the progression of the condition. This includes issuing prescriptions for long-term medications and continuing treatment plans set by specialists.

Referrals to specialists

For more complex health concerns, your Primary Healthcare doctor can issue referrals to specialists such as cardiologists, neurologists, or orthopaedists – when a patient requires further medical assessment or treatment. However, you can book appointments directly with gynaecologists, psychiatrists, oncologists, or dentists – no referral needed.

Teleconsultations

Teleconsultations allow you to consult with a doctor remotely, providing convenient access to care without visiting a clinic. These are especially useful for managing chronic illnesses, issuing e-prescriptions, or receiving referrals.
