The sigmoidoscopy procedure involves inserting a special speculum (a sigmoidoscope) into the anus and examining it, the rectum as well as the sigmoid and descending colons, which means about 70 cm of the alimentary tract.
The examination is aimed at a morphological assessment of the surface of the colonic mucosa.
With the use of additional instruments, it is possible to do a mucosal biopsy for histopathological examination and to perform endoscopic procedures. The procedure can be conducted under general anaesthesia (a patient is put to sleep for about ten minutes after an intravenous administration of an anaesthetic).
At Medicover Hospital, sigmoidoscopy is performed by specialists experienced in in the field of endoscopic examination:
- Wojciech Kosmala, MD – Coordinator of the Endoscopy Unit, gastroenterologist
- Anna Cybulska, MD, PhD – gastroenterologist
- Monika Gapys, MD – gastroenterologist, general practitioner
