Invisalign is a new solution to correct malocclusion. It is an alternative to traditional orthodontic braces worn on teeth for a period of several years. Invisalign braces can be removed, for example, while eating, and are not noticeable.

1. What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a modern tooth straightening system. The kit includes transparent braces (aligners) made of special heat-shrinkable material, which are invisible to bystanders. Nobody will know you are wearing them.

The Invisalign braces are not permanently fixed, which makes them flexible and comfortable. They are easy to clean and do not interfere with oral hygiene. Before wearing them, brush and floss your teeth thoroughly. No special steps are required when wearing Invisalign. The aesthetic device can be easily removed for eating and drinking so you can enjoy your meal in peace.

 2. Who will benefit from Invisalign?

Invisalign braces are a great choice for those who value discretion. The material’s transparency and thinness makes it invisible to others – only the patient knows it’s there.

Invisalign was developed to help straighten the teeth of adults and adolescents. The braces come in several types, depending on age and planned treatment. Invisalign Full is a complete version of the system for treating most orthodontic problems, while the Lite version is perfect for less serious problems (diastema, crowding of the teeth). Invisalign Teen was created especially for teenagers, which, in addition to the benefits of the adult version, includes several other amenities, e.g.

  • a blue usage indicator to keep track of how long the aligners are worn;
  • parts that adapt to permanent teeth;
  • replaceable covers in the event of loss or damage.

Indications for wearing Invisalign braces are many, ranging from minor problems to serious malocclusions:

  • crowding of the teeth;
  • tooth gaps;
  • underbite;
  • open bite;
  • cross bite;
  • deep bite.

The final choice of treatment should be made after considering all the pros and cons together with the dentist, but Invisalign can be used in most cases eligible for orthodontic treatment.

3. Invisalign or braces?

The most important feature that differentiates orthodontic braces from aligners is comfort and flexibility. Traditional braces are fixed to the teeth with special permanent cement and it is not possible to remove them until the end of treatment. This can cause discomfort in the mouth or inflammation of the tangential mucosa. Patients must deny themselves many foods that could damage the braces (nuts) or accelerate tooth decay (sweets) due to the difficult maintenance of oral hygiene. Non-compliance can result in decalcification of the enamel, inflammation of the gums, as well as carious lesions.

This problem does not apply to Invisalign braces, thanks to the flexibility of use. When eating, simply remove the braces and enjoy your meal. The same applies to oral hygiene. After removing the braces, brushing or flossing your teeth is no different to regular dental care.

Remember that aesthetic braces will only be effective if they are used regularly. The manufacturer recommends that they remain on the teeth for 22 hours a day, with breaks only for meals and morning oral hygiene. If the patient has a problem following these recommendations, fixed orthodontic braces may be a better choice.

4. What does the treatment entail?

At the first visit, the dentist discusses the patient's problem with them and selects the best treatment method. After choosing the Invisalign system, you will need to take an x-ray of your teeth, diagnostic impressions and a 3D scan. Based on this, the aesthetic aligners will be created for you. After receiving them, the patient should replace the aligners every 1-2 weeks, ensuring that the teeth straightening process is ongoing. It is important that the braces stay on the teeth for 22 hours. Only following these recommendations will ensure success.

The total duration of treatment varies for each patient and is determined by the dentist.
